Biography: Glastone served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for twelve years through four non-consecutive times between 1868 and 1894. Prior to this he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer. His popularity among the working classes earned him the nickname 'The People's William.'

His four terms as prime minister saw several reforms introduced. These include the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland, the introduction of secret voting. He introduced the Third Reform Act. Crises in Ireland led the government to introduce repressive measures but also to protect some rights of Irish tenant farmers. Gladstone's government presided over the Fall of Khartoum, in which he was strongly criticized for his handling of the death of General George oordon.

Gladstone formed his last government at the age of 82, and resigned in 1894.
