Biography: From his start as a folk singer-songwriter while earning degrees in journalism and German at Texas A&M, to an internationally celebrated musician, Lovett does not fit neatly into any genre category. While generally considered a country artist, his songs include large doses of blues, jazz, western swing, folk, rock and gospel.
A festival appearance in Germany afforded him the chance to play backed by some musicians from Arizona. They eventually became the core of his 'Large Band'. His eponymous debut album was released in 1986, and he has since had eleven more studio sets thus far, 6 of which were certified gold, and garnered 4 Grammy Awards. Popular albums titles include "Lyle Lovett and His Large Band "(1989); "Joshua Judges Ruth" (1992); "The Road to Ensenada" (1996); and "Step Inside This House" (1998).
Lovett has acted in a number of films, notably four for director Robert Altman: "The Player" (1992), "Short Cuts" (1993), "Prêt-à-Porter" (1994), and "Cookie's Fortune" (1999). Some of his other film roles include "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" (2007), and a humorous role in "Angels Sing", a family Christmas movie He has appeared on television in "Mad About You", " Castle", and "The Bridge".
Lovett married American actress Julia Roberts after meeting her on the set of "The Player". Following a three-week romance, they eloped, divorcing less than 2 years later. In 2017, he married April Kimble, with whom he has twins.
In 2012, Lovett was inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame. In 2015, Lovett received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Texas A&M University.
