- President Uhuru Kenyatta has called his Tanzanian counterpart John Bombe Magufuli following a devastating earthquake in the country

- Uhuru condoled with Magufuli following the disaster in Bukoba District, in North Western Tanzania

- He said Kenya will donate iron sheets, blankets, and mattresses to the affected Tanzanians

Following a devastating earthquake in Tanzania which led to loss of lives and destruction of property on Saturday, September 10, Kenya has offered a helping hand.

President Uhuru Kenyatta in a telephone conversation with his Tanzania counterpart John Pombe Magufuli has offered to help rebuild destroyed homes.

 During the phone conversation whose details have been released by State House, Uhuru said the tremor whose epicentre was Bukoba District, in North Western Tanzania was regrettable as it led to the death of more than ten people and also destroyed infrastructure.

Uhuru also wished the injured Tanzanians quick recovery adding Kenya will send a donation of 4,000 iron sheets, 400 blankets and 100 mattresses that will be airlifted by the Kenya Defence Forces on Tuesday, September 13 to assist those affected by the disaster in Tanzania.

“I have learnt with deep sorrow and regret the loss of sixteen precious lives, injury to hundreds of our Tanzanian brothers and sisters, as well massive destruction of property and livelihoods following the devastating earthquake in Bukoba District, in North Western Tanzania,” Uhuru told Mgufuli on phone.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Kenya, and on my own behalf, I extend heartfelt condolences and sympathies to Your Excellency, the Government and people of Tanzania, and particularly to the grieving families," Uhuru added.

The 5.7 magnitude earthquake which ripped across other parts of East Africa caused panic among residents.

 Tremors were felt in several parts of Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya in parts of Nyanza, Western Kenya and Rift Valley.
